Vermonters to get largest fixed-wireless rollout

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

In many rural areas, people who want high-speed Internet access have only one option: relatively slow and expensive satellite dishes. Now parts of rural Vermont could get a new choice.

Phone company FairPoint Communications Inc. intends to beam Internet connections over radio waves to homes and business in the state, in what appears to be the largest planned U.S. deployment of “fixed wireless” technology as a substitute for wired Internet service.

FairPoint has 300,000 phone customers in Vermont, most of whom it acquired from Verizon Communications Inc. this year. Three-quarters of them will have access to broadband by the end of the year through their phone lines.

But some phone lines in rural areas extend so far from the phone company’s base that the DSL broadband signal doesn’t reach the subscriber. For those, FairPoint plans to use wireless WiMax equipment from Nortel Networks Corp. and Airspan Networks Inc., the companies said Wednesday.

Tens of thousands of homes and business could be offered WiMax service, FairPoint spokeswoman Beth Fastiggi said. Prices haven’t been set.

Unlike cellular broadband cards for laptops, the WiMax antennas won’t be portable or usable on the go. The speeds will be comparable to low-end DSL, with downloads of 1 to 3 megabits per second, Nortel said. The transmissions will have a range of a few miles, or up to 10 miles if FairPoint’s tower has a clear shot to the receiving antenna.

Sprint Nextel Corp. and Clearwire Corp. are building a network in parts of the country using another WiMax variant that allows for mobile use. AT&T Inc. is using “fixed” WiMax, much like FairPoint plans to do, in two communities in Alaska.

FairPoint also bought the New Hampshire and Maine service areas of Verizon, but hasn’t announced whether it will use WiMax there.

Kidneys could give advance warning of cardiac risksz

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Kidneys could give advance warning of cardiac risks and should be factored in the assessment of individual risk, according to a study.

‘Proteinuria’ and ‘albuminuria’ are the presence of proteins in the urine that may be a signal of damage to, or disease of, the kidneys.

One in 20 adults have such markers, and although they have previously been reported to be associated with coronary heart disease (CHD), the consistency and strength of the relationship between the two was not clearly defined.

In a new systematic review and meta-analysis of previously published cohort studies, George Institute researchers have shown a strong and continuous association between proteinuria and subsequent risk of CHD.

The findings of the new analysis suggest that proteinuria should be incorporated into individual cardiovascular risk assessments, according to a release of George Institute of International Health.

CHD is the leading cause of death among adults in developed countries. With age, fatty deposits called atherosclerotic plaques coat the walls of arteries, the vessels that nourish the organs of the body by carrying blood and oxygen to them.

The paper was published in PLoS Medicine.

Cold viruses activate killer genes, study finds

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

The common cold virus activates dozens of immune system genes in the lining of the nose, including some natural antivirals that might be used as the basis of new drugs, researchers reported on Friday.

It also appears to shut down some genes, but to a lesser degree, the international team reported in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Of particular interest is a gene that controls a natural antiviral called viperin, said David Proud of the University of Calgary in Alberta, who led the study.

Viperin, only discovered in the 1990s, was known to be involved in other viral infections but not the common cold, Proud said. “This had never been examined during rhinovirus infections,” he said.

Proud and colleagues, including a team at cold remedy maker Procter & Gamble Co, tested 35 people who agreed to be infected with a common cold virus called human rhinovirus 16.

Hours after infection, the researchers scraped a little bit of the lining from inside the volunteers’ noses and analyzed gene expression, or activity, in the cells.

Every cell in the body carries all the genes, but certain genes become more or less active during various activities.

“I think that is the ideal approach to trying to treat these viral infections. If you can find out what are the body’s natural defenses, can you either boost them or supplement them?” Proud said in a telephone interview.

“The findings are important because they provide us a blueprint for developing the ideal cold treatment: one that maintains the body’s natural antiviral response while normalizing the inflammatory response,” added P&G’s Lynn Jump, who also worked on the study.

Others had looked at immune responses one by one. “This was really the first study that looked at the entire human genome,” Proud said. “We confirmed some of the things we knew, and we found an awful lot more that we weren’t aware of.”

For instance, you might be able to blame a runny nose, sneezing and chills on viperin, the researchers found. Symptoms such as a stuffy nose, headache and cough were not associated with viperin, however.

Several immune system chemicals called chemokines, which call in other virus-killing cells, became very active 48 hours after infection, they found. So did a class of immune system compounds called interferons.

Viperin, on average, was six times as active in infected as in uninfected volunteers. Other antiviral substances that were activated included compounds called MX1 and MX2, which are linked with resistance to influenza.

Proud said it will take years of careful study before researchers have any idea of how to control cold symptoms. “You need a little bit of inflammation to have some protection,” he noted.

More than 200 different viruses cause common cold symptoms, including the rhinoviruses but also others such as respiratory syncytial virus or RSV.

Many, including RSV and rhinoviruses, are linked with more serious conditions such as asthma and chronic bronchitis, now grouped with emphysema as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

“In young children, if they have recurrent viral infections in early life that are rhinovirus-driven, they are 10 times more likely to develop asthma,” Proud said.

“Eighty-five percent of acute asthma attacks are associated with viruses.”

Source: Yahoo to announce plans for Neb. facility

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Yahoo Inc. is expected to unveil plans to build a new facility in Nebraska on Friday, just days after the California-based Internet company announced it will cut at least 1,500 workers as it deals with the economic downturn.

A source with knowledge of the project confirmed Yahoo’s plans on Thursday.

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman is scheduled to hold a news conference Friday morning in La Vista to announce an economic development project that would bring jobs to the state.

Heineman’s office wouldn’t comment, other than to confirm Friday’s news conference.

Earlier this year, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo applied for the biggest slate of state tax breaks available in Nebraska to help set up some operations in La Vista.

If the company goes ahead with the project, within four years it would have to invest at least $100 million and create at least 50 jobs with a minimum average salary of $68,700.

The news comes on heels of an announcement Tuesday that Yahoo will cut 10 percent of its employees, or 1,500 people, citing a 64 percent drop in its third-quarter profit.

Yahoo last laid off workers in February. In that round, about 1,000 workers were cut loose, but the company’s payroll returned to the previous level within months.

Yahoo is bracing for a deep downturn likely to extend well into 2009 by trimming $400 million from its annual expenses of $3.9 billion. Besides shedding 1,500 workers during the next two months, Yahoo may close some of its U.S. offices and assign more jobs to lower-paid contractors in other countries.

Shares of Yahoo rose 26 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $12.65 in Thursday trading.

Shares hit new low for 2008, pare some losses

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) fell to its lowest since

ne 2006 on Thursday as a global rout of equities raised worries of further foreign investor selling, before some bargain hunting helped the market regain some composure.

Leading private sector firm the Reliance Industries, which reports quarterly results after market hours, was down 3.9 percent at 1,264.70, having earlier fallen as much as 6.4 percent to its lowest since Dec. 2006.

The company is forecast to report a modest 2.2 percent rise in net profit on slimmer refining margins.

Asian stocks dropped to a four-year low for a second day today, with exporters especially hard hit, on growing fears that a severe global downturn would depress corporate earnings further.

Analysts said that they were expecting that the Indian stock would fall at the open as Japan’s Nikkei stock index plunged to a new five-and-half year low amid fears of recession.

“Today’s meltdown , we can see, again due to very weak global cues, it seems that the problem is too serious, whatever the governments are taking measures are not sufficient because they are not reflecting on the market,” said Siddhart Kunawala, a stock analyst.

The 30-share BSE index opened down 4.8 percent and fell as far as 9,682.40, but by 10:59 a.m. had pared its losses to be down 2.07 percent 9,959.83.

The index is down by over half in 2008, with foreigners selling a net of 12.2 billion dollars in stocks so far this year, largely reversing 2007’s record net buying of 17.4 billion dollars.

UEFA Cup woe for Spurs, Milan sink Heerenveen

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Udinese inflicted more misery on hapless Tottenham Hotspur with a 2-0 UEFA group stage victory on Thursday over the London side who contributed to their own downfall through poor goalkeeping and ill-discipline.

Competition favourites AC Milan brushed aside Heerenveen 3-1 to make a confident start in Group E while Sevilla, winners in 2006 and 2007, eased to a 2-0 home win over VfB Stuttgart in Group C.

In-form Udinese’s victory over Spurs increased the pressure on under-fire Spanish coach Juande Ramos, whose side prop up the Premier League and failed to finish with 11 men for the second successive match.

Udinese, second in Serie A, were gifted the chance to take the lead midway through the first half when Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes failed to clear a backpass and then fouled Fabio Quagliarella to stop the Italian striker gaining possession.

Fellow Italian international Antonio Di Natale swept home the penalty. Spurs, who had two players sent off in their defeat by Stoke City at the weekend, were reduced to 10 men just before the hour when Jamie O’Hara was booked twice in a minute.

A swift break secured the Group D points for Udinese four minutes from time with Simone Pepe firing home.

Milan took a full-strength squad to Heerenveen and Carlo Ancelotti’s side made class count, stamping their authority on the game with two goals in the first 23 minutes.

An own goal from defender Calvin Jong-A-Pin, who diverted in Kaka’s cross, and a rare appearance on the scoresheet by midfielder Gennaro Gattuso put Milan in control.

Filippo Inzaghi made it 3-0 after 69 minutes, prompting Ancelotti to bring off Inzaghi, Kaka and Shevchenko and replace them with Ronaldinho, Marek Jankulovski and Alexandre Pato.

Sampdoria completed a fine night for Serie A sides, winning 2-1 at Partizan Belgrade in Group C.

DZAGOYEV DOUBLE

CSKA Moscow’s talented teenage playmaker Alan Dzagoyev scored twice as the 2005 winners opened their Group H campaign with a 3-0 win at home to Deportivo Coruna.

Dzagoyev, who made his debut for Russia in a World Cup qualifier against Germany this month, struck twice in three first half minutes for CSKA, unbeaten in the Russian league since July 20. Brazilian Vagner Love added a third on the hour.

This is the last season at the helm for coach Valery Gazzaev, who led CSKA to their first European trophy when they beat Sporting in the 2005 final. He said in July that he would step down when the Russian season finishes in November.

Aston Villa got the better of Ajax Amsterdam in a pulsating clash between two former European champions as they edged their Group F rivals 2-1 at Villa Park.

Skipper Martin Laursen nodded Villa ahead from an Ashley Young corner before the hosts then conceded an equaliser in identical fashion when Belgian Thomas Vermaelen was left unmarked to direct in Urby Emanuelson’s corner.

Gareth Barry restored Villa’s lead seconds before halftime.

“For the first match in the group stage I think it was a wonderful win against a very, very good side,” Villa manager Martin O’Neill told Channel Five TV.

Bundesliga leaders Hamburg and German rivals Schalke 04 recorded opening group stage victories.

Hamburg won 2-1 in Slovakia against Zilina in Group F with Croatian internationals Mladen Petric and Ivica Olic getting their goals, while 1997 winners Schalke 04 brushed aside Paris St Germain 3-1 in their Group A tie in Gelsenkirchen.

Australian Harry Kewell headed the only goal in the first half to earn 2000 winners Galatasaray a 1-0 Group B win over Greece’s Olympiakos Piraeus in Istanbul.

The top three teams from each of the eight groups progress to the first knockout round where they will be joined by the eight sides finishing third in their Champions League groups.

Kobe Bryant’s injury not serious

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Lakers fans can rest easy. Kobe Bryant’s right knee was a bit sore Wednesday, but the injury isn’t serious and it’s possible he won’t miss any playing time.

“I’m all right, a little bit better today, a better mood, anyway,” Bryant said after sitting out practice due to the hyperextended right knee he suffered Tuesday night in the second quarter of the Lakers’ 102-98 preseason victory over the Charlotte Bobcats in San Diego.

Wearing an ice bag on his knee, Bryant said he felt a lot better about his injury Wednesday morning.

“There was no swelling,” he said. “At that point, I knew I was OK. Some injuries can go either way. You’ve got to get lucky. I didn’t sleep much, to be honest with you. Just moving it around, seeing if it was all right. These type of injuries kind of sneak up on you.”

Bryant, the reigning NBA MVP, was injured under the Lakers’ basket when he banged knees with teammate Josh Powell while going for a rebound. He immediately signaled to the bench that he was hurt, and a timeout was called. Bryant then sat at the end of the bench before walking to the locker room, and didn’t return for the second half.

“I saw the ring flash before my eyes,” Bryant said. “I was pretty worried. That’s the scariest part, sitting there for five or 10 minutes, seeing what’s going to develop.”

Powell said he didn’t feel anything.

“I didn’t see him until I turned around. I turned around, saw him jumping up and down. I thought he rolled his ankle,” Powell said.

“It was all his fault,” Bryant said with a smile. “We just happened to run into each other.”

The 30-year-old Bryant, examined Wednesday by trainer Gary Vitti, won’t see a doctor or have an MRI. He said he hopes to play Thursday night when the Lakers face the Bobcats again, this time in Anaheim.

“If I can go, I can go,” Bryant said. “It’s all good.”

Lakers coach Phil Jackson said he wouldn’t talk Bryant out of playing.

“We always like players to go out and play,” the coach said. “That’s what they do. It gives us a chance to go out and function on the floor.”

While Jackson said he wasn’t too concerned, he added: “Seeing this injury over the course of my career, it’s an injury you can’t minimize at all. It could have some lingering effects. We’ll see how it is tomorrow. We kind of go day-to-day in this business.”

Notes:@ The Lakers requested waivers on Joe Crawford and forward CJ Giles, reducing their roster to the opening-day maximum of 15. Crawford, the 58th overall pick in the NBA draft last June after playing four seasons at Kentucky, averaged 2.8 points in six preseason games. Giles, a free agent who played for Oregon State last season, averaged 2.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in four preseason games.
