Trail cameras – How to use it with animals

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

The obvious and intelligent option is to take up trail cameras and hide it in the place where the animal frequently visits. The camera should be hidden properly so that the animal won’t see it or damage it. If the trail cameras are properly camouflaged and placed the only way the animal can find the camera is through smell or scent around to camera. So try to avoid this as well.

Digital rangefinder cameras can also be used equally like trail cameras but range finder cameras are losing its shine to single lens reflex cameras. The digital rangefinder cameras were popular in 1930s to 1970 but now there are modern cameras with advanced technologies which have over taken the digital rangefinder cameras.

As trail cameras and digital rangefinders are for hunting we need to have predator calls also to complete the hunting baggage packing. There are different types of predator calls. Some even allows the users to add different sound to the instruments. In some cases there might be some limitations on the number of sound added based on the money that you have paid. These are called pre programmed predator calls. Based on your need you can choose your predator calls.

Gardening _ makes home pleasant

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Generally plants living in big apartments and small home, who cannot afford for large space to go for gardening in full swing, go for the technique called indoor planting. Window boxes are the important segment in indoor planting. In this method containers are used to grow plants they are hanged outside doors and windows just to add scenic beauty and color to the home. They are made up of materials PVC resin plastic, wood, metal, etc….the advantage in window boxes are can be removed and replanted at any time, less pest attack and hide eyesores in our home. Proper methods or steps can be followed for proper growth of plants and only small structured plants and herbs can be grown this makes the window box technique less important and these disadvantages lead to the other type of indoor gardening technique called outdoor planters they are basically used to grow plants of comparatively large size which are used for both medicinal and aesthetic purpose. The other purpose for using outdoor planters are they give us herbs and vegetables which we can use in kitchen purposes for cooking and other purposes. The window boxes have some box shaped structure with hanging hooks used to hang the plants. Thus these are the various methods for making our home an attractable one.

Charles Darwin ‘facing accusations of plagiarism’

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Experts have criticised Charles Darwin for plagiarism and unjustly claiming credit as the father of evolutionary theory.

As the scientific world prepares to mark bicentenary of the author of ‘On the Origin of Species’, a group of critics has commissioned computer experts with specialized anti-plagiarism software to scour Darwin’s book, published in 1859, for similarities to a paper released the year before by Alfred Russel Wallace, a naturalist who worked for eight years in modern Indonesia.

Initial indications are that the analysis will reveal that some of the most ideas in On the Origin of Species were taken from Wallace, particularly, the idea that species with variations helping them to survive would thrive and pass on these features to their offspring.

As far as the dispute over who deserves the credit is concerned, it is as old as evolutionary theory itself, with Darwin’s defenders claiming the two came up with similar ideas independently at the same time, reports TimesOnline.

According to James Moore, a biographer and professor of the history of science at the Open University, the new plagiarism claim is “manufactured.”

He added that those pursuing it were under qualified to do so.

“You wouldn’t go to a plumber to do your tax return,” he said.

The adulation has shocked critics, including lawyer David Hallmark, a trustee of the Wallace Foundation of Indonesia.

“The descent of Wallace from equality to relative invisibility is the direct result of the unlawful conduct of Charles Darwin by suppressing the true worth of Wallace as the author of the theory,” Hallmark said.

The software used by Hallmark’s copyright experts can detect where phrasing is identical and also signs of an author’s style being copied.

Hallmark plans to submit his findings to the International Association of Forensic Linguists in Amsterdam in July.

Maintaining Water Gardens

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Water gardens do require some extra attention and care when it comes to maintenance especially the Japanese water garden. This is because of the huge water bed that you will need to have in the garden with lots of fishes in it and hence requires a huge amount of time and energy to be spent on them. The Japanese water garden will require a dedicated person exclusively allotted for them to maintain them, else it would become wasted.

You will need to change the water in your watergarden ponds frequently so as it looks fresh always. Adequate water cleaning materials should be used to avoid pests and worms being developed on those water beds. Water gardens also had to be adequately spaced out to avoid congestion and the water should be separated well from the garden by way of putting borders around them.

If you want to make your kids play on the water garden, you can add in sandbox kits to add more fun to your water garden. Thus you can keep your kids occupied there and you can thus relax in the garden. These sandbox kits can be brought from your neighborhood garden stores or convenience stores or even online.

On the Net: Hulu is Web site of the year

Friday, December 19th, 2008

In the Wild West that is online video, Hulu.com has proven to be a trailblazing answer to how professional content can thrive on the Web.

It’s this year’s pick for Web site of the year.

“This is period of great experimentation in regard to media, in regard to online video,” said Hulu chief executive officer Jason Kilar in a recent interview. “You’ve seen a lot, you’re probably going to see even more in terms of various business models, various interface designs. I personally love to operate in moments of time like that.”

Hulu officially launched March 12, a result of the unlikely collaboration between News Corp. and NBC Universal. Normally, such corporate fusion in new mediums doesn’t pan out.

The blogosphere was, to say the least, doubtful. Before its name was announced, bloggers derided the project as “Clown Co.”

“Boy, did we have to eat crow,” recently wrote Michael Arrington of the influential blog Techcrunch.com. He added: “I was wrong. Hulu rocks. Despite ridiculous odds, the company was able to pull of a joint venture between two humongous parent media companies and provides users with a compelling, sexy product.”

Hulu hosts more than 1,000 shows, from “Family Guy” to “Saturday Night Live.” There are more than 130 content providers, not only NBC and Fox, but Sony Pictures Television, MGM Studios, Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures and PBS. The site’s database of full-length films also has grown.

ComScore pegged its unique monthly visitors for October at 24 million. On average, a visitor watches 10 videos on Hulu in a month, which is good enough to chart Hulu sixth in videos viewed online.

That only garners Hulu about 2 percent of the online video market, far below the leading Google sites — of which Google’s YouTube is the big draw. But many believe Hulu is more appealing to advertisers than YouTube, and that Hulu’s ad revenues could equal YouTube’s by the end of 2009. (Hulu declines to share revenue figures, but says they finished above internal estimates for the year.)

Previously Internet-shy content providers — notably the TV networks — seem to have embraced the Hulu model. The Viacom-owned CBS.com recently relaunched in a design very similar to Hulu’s clean, white interface and user-friendly functionality.

“The whole tenor of the conversation is markedly different, in terms of folks like Sony and MGM and Warner Bros. really coming on board once they realized what it was we were building,” said Kilar.

Not everyone is on board, though. Earlier this month at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, Discovery chief executive officer David Zaslav said his networks would not be putting their long-form content online.

But while Kilar doesn’t pretend Hulu and its new model is yet fully formed, 2008 has been in many ways a banner year for professionally created online video.

One of the year’s biggest hits was Joss Whedon’s three-part musical “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog” (on Hulu). “SNL” clips were enormously popular online thanks to Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin impression (also on Hulu). And other sites like FunnyOrDie.com and Strike.TV were pipelines for Hollywood pros to try their hands at Web videos.

“Based on the folks that are working with us today, the response I get is what Hulu is delivering for them … much more than they ever thought it would do in 2008,” said Kilar. “We’re quite bullish about where this goes.”

Interesting is what shows are most popular on Hulu. “Heroes” and “House,” for example, rank below cult comedies “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” (FX) and “Arrested Development” (canceled by Fox in 2006).

“It’s a great theoretical: If `Arrested Development’ were on the air today, would they have canceled it?” wonders Kilar. “My own personal opinion is no, given the fact it’s our second-most popular show of all time.”

Next year, Hulu hopes to expand internationally. Rights issues — often different by country — have made such expansion a thorny prospect.

Kilar also hopes to make Hulu more broadly syndicated across the Web. Said Kilar: “If we can do it in a professional way, we’d love to be a part of MSN, of IMDb, of Yahoo and a number of other sites.”

New Food Pyramid Is Aimed at Kids

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

A new federal government food pyramid for preschoolers may help parents deal with picky eating problems, especially as youngsters are introduced to new kinds of foods during Christmas meals.

The MyPyramid for Preschoolers interactive Web site (MyPyramid.gov) offers individualized nutrition guidance to meet the needs of children aged 2 to 5, according to the U.S. Department of Agricultures Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP).

“This is a great tool for all parents of preschoolers but particularly those of finicky eaters. It’s loaded with great ideas and suggestions for families so they can help their kids eat a more varied and nutritious diet. What I find most useful is how to talk with kids about what to eat and tips on how to have fun with food around the dinner table,” CNPP executive director Brian Wansink said in an USDA news release.

Among the MyPyramid for Preschoolers tips to help parents deal with finicky eaters:

  • Set reasonable limits for the start and end of a meal. When you see your child is no longer interested in the meal, excuse the child from the table.
  • Encourage your child to try new foods, but don’t lecture or force your child to eat.
  • Talk about fun and happy things as part of an overall effort to make mealtimes stress-free.
  • Cook together. Encourage preschoolers to help you prepare meals and snacks.

Other features on the MyPyramid for Preschoolers Web site include:

  • MyPyramid Plan, where users can create a customized eating plan.
  • Growth During the Preschool Years answers parents’ questions about their children’s growth.
  • Developing Healthy Eating Habits explains to parents and caregivers how to help children develop healthy eating habits.
  • Physical Activity outlines how to encourage preschoolers to be active.
  • Food Safety.
  • Sample Meal and Snack Patterns help translate the MyPyramid Plan into individual meals and snacks.

“In addition to the broad spectrum of topic areas covered on this site, are the interactive components, including a customized MyPyramid Plan that can be printed and posted on the refrigerator door,” Wansink said.
