Hong Kong sets panda reserve as priority Sichuan aid project

Monday, October 13th, 2008

lmost half of Hong Kong’s aid package to help China’s quake-stricken Sichuan will be used to restore a giant panda reserve, the government said Sunday.

Hong Kong’s government said it would spend 863 million of its 2 billion Hong Kong dollar (256 million US) commitment on a 4.5 kilometre road leading to Wolong Nature Reserve in the country’s southwest province, which was devastated by a 8.00-magnitude quake in May.

Another 22.7 million dollars would be devoted to studying the 200,000-hectare (490,000-acre) park, a government spokesman told AFP.

The reserve was the top priority among the first 20 Hong Kong-funded reconstruction projects, officials said after signing an agreement with mainland officials in Sichuan on Saturday.

“We now need to climb two large mountains and cross 350 kilometres before arriving at the reserve,” Carrie Lam, secretary for development and a member of the delegation to Sichuan, said in a statement.

“This has largely affected the restoration work for the reserve. The importance and urgency of the construction of a new road is unquestionable,” she said.

Lam said the work in Wolong would involve about 1.7 billion dollars, and the government would seek more funding from the legislature.

The reserve was established in 1963 in Wenchuan county, the epicentre of the quake that left nearly 88,000 people dead or missing.

Fourteen pandas have already been moved out of the Wolong Giant Panda Research Centre following the quake, while 48 remain. Another 150 pandas are believed to live in the wild in the reserve.

Punishment for my little dog

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

My little Yorkie terrier ate my glasses. He managed to jump on the kitchen table and grabbed my glasses and took them outside and destroyed them.

I went outside to find my glasses in three pieces. I was furious! I grabbed him and rubbed his face in my broken glasses and spanked him on the butt a couple of times. NO NO NO!
I hope he learned his lesson, but he’s scared of me now and I feel a little bad. But he deserved it! I’m still very very mad!
Was this too harsh? Or should I punish him some more?

Bad anthony bad,bad.
Your dog learned that you are an angry person and not to be trusted.
You didn’t teach him to stay off the table and he has no idea he did anything wrong.
1. you have 3 seconds to disclipine a dog.
2. Its quicker and easier to teach a dog with positive training.
3 teach off and down.
A. Off is for furniture and people
B, Down means to lay down.
Discipline Once something is done it is done. A serious no will get you further than spanking or rubbing his nose in stuff. You could have hurt him.
Taking out your anger on an animal is never ok. They need clear instruction befor the fact. Once the do something like your dog did it’s to late.
Now you have to apologize with a treat and lots of petting. They remember the bad stuff longer. If you need to, get a coach to help you interact with your little friend.

—-

Dogs learn best with positive reinforcement. Praising and rewarding the desired behavior is the most effective way to train a dog.

Dogs, especially the small breeds like yorkshire terriers, do not learn well by punishment. They become confused and scared and may become highly anxious, neurotic and skittish dogs who fears you.

A simple “NO” in a stern voice gets the point across. Scaring your dog only does harm and he doesn’t learn a thing.

—-

He didn’t learn a darn thing.

Unless you catch a dog in the act, he has no clue why you are so pissed off. They don’t make those connections.

Spanking doesn’t do anything either or rubbing his nose in it.

Crate him or put him a safe room when you can’t supervise and then keep an eye on him when you are there and a firm “No” should be enough to prevent this kind of problem.

——

that was WAY too harsh. he DID NOT deserve it. its YOUR fault!
1. leaving the glasses on the table
2. not having him trained to not jump on the table.
3. he obviously doesn’t have the right toys if he wants to play w/your glasses

What Kind Of Fish Should I Get?

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

My 55 gallon tank just got finished going through a fishless cycle. I want some medium sized fish with alot of color. What would be some good fish to get?

try getting a Starlight Bristlenose Pleco: http://www.aquariumlife.net/profile-imag… and maybe some cobalt blue zebra cichlids http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f370/P…

——

African Cuchilids are among the most colorful freshwater fish. Just make sure when you get them to do some research as some species get mean and many are territorial.

What does it mean when a betta’s gills are moving really fast?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

My betta’s gills are moving really fast, what does this mean?

it can be a sign of an ammonia build up in the water or stress it could also be that there is a shortage of air due to water temp if you don’t have an air stone in with him and he is in a bowl during the summer as the water heats up it carries less air

Is it true that then when a Bird hits your window someone is going to die?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Ok the other day I was sitting in the living room watching TV and a bird crashed into my patio door and flew away. Today a bird flew and crashed into my mom’s window and now she thinks that someone is going to die.

No it is just a superstition. Birds often see the window as an open space, they see the reflection of the trees, land, sky, etc and they think they can fly through it. If you find a bird that has hit the window put it in a container with a lid, like a shoe box and leave it somewhere warm and quiet for about an hour. Darkness will calm it and should revive it and you will be able to set it free. If it has more serious injuries you need to contact a wildlife rehabber in your area
“Break up window reflections by sticking objects to the outside of the glass.
“Disrupt reflections with spray-on materials or soap”
“Attach branches in front of windows.”
“Attach hanging objects to deter birds.”

Lysteria on Goats?!?

Friday, June 6th, 2008

I went to a got farm today thinking i would buy a goat but the man said a few goats he had had lysteria. I was wondering if nyone knew what this was and how i could prevent it if it comes in contact with my herd.

Goat breeders usually call this “listeriosis”. It is usually caused by feeding bad feed, parasite overload, or other poor management by the breeder. It is treated with the antibiotic Penicillin and can be fatal if not treated quickly enough.

The symptoms are almost identical to “goat polio” which is a Thiamine deficiency. It is treated with large doses of Thiamin (Vitamin B) every 6 hours.

For more information on both of these goat problems see this page:

Do u find cats scary?

Saturday, December 1st, 2007
  1. No I don’t and you wouldn’t either if you gave them a chance.
  2. OMG yes! and cat ppl get insulted when i get scared of their cats

as to why? i dunno something in the eyes, the way they strut…the whole superstition thing about them…..both my siblings claim they saw a black cat in their room when they awoke in the mid of the night and everything in the house was locked…both were on different occasions

  3. I definitely find cats creepy. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I think it is because they remind me of evil magic( you know black cats and witches).
  4. I love cats! Had cats all my life! Never had a dog. Cats are so cool!
  5. I find them intriguing! You never know what is going on in that head. And their eyes are just stunning! It is kinda creepy when they jump up and do the crazy cat run without any provocation, but hell, it’s really entertaining after the initial startle.
  6. No I like cats but some can look scary if they have no ears or something or those hairless cats, those are creepy.
  7. shave it.
  8. No not at all….but I know someone who is…..lol

Why is my 8 year old cat?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007
  1. He is marking his territory. Or take him to the vet just to make sure. But I’m pretty sure he is just marking his territory
  2. Well it COULD be just an aging cat thing, however urinary problems are common with male cats. He could have a bladder infection, or worse- kidney or bladder stones. I lost a male cat to bladder stones. Peeing around the house was the first sign of any problem, and by then it was too late. Some other health problems like diabetes and tumors can cause this too. If I were you, I’d take him to the vet right away and make sure he’s alright.
  3. some one has come inside your house with another cat scent on their shoes, cats have a good nose, so your cat smells it and trys to out spray it with it’s pee!!Try cleaning some areas with citiral oil.
  4. I won’t waste time with a lengthy answer, but.. this site here:
    http://www.hdw-inc.com/litterbox.htm
Has plenty of information on your problem, just scroll down a little to “URINE MARKING AND SPRAYING” and read up on that.
  5. Inappropriate elimination is often a symptom of urinary tract infection. The cat begins to associate the pain he experiences while peeing with the litter box, so goes elsewhere. He might also be trying to get your attention.

So your first step is to have the cat evaluated by a veterinarian. If you notice he is straining a lot but not producing much (may seem constipated), then it is urgent enough to find an emergency vet after hours. Male cats sometimes get blocked up, and then it is only a matter of hours before it is too late. If he is not completely blocked up, then it can wait until morning - but make sure to get him in to see the vet tomorrow.

Here is a link to a good article on how to solve litter box problems, in case it’s not a medical issue http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pe…

  6. He is marking his territory.
  7. is he spraying or urinating?

the first thing that comes to my mind, especially with an older cat is kidney issues or diabetes. it could also be a urinary tract infection. if this is a new thing for him to do, a trip to the vets is a good idea. if its not a medical issue they can advise you on what to do for behavior problems.

how are is appetite and water intake?
