If my neighbor has a fire that does some damage to my apt./belongings, will the neighbor’s renters insurance cover my damages or will my own renters insurance cover my damages?
The first thing you would do is to turn the claim in to your own renters insurance company. If the fire was caused by the negligence of your neighbor, your company will subrogate (try to collect) from her insurance company. If she was not negligent and it was accidental (something shorted out or something like that) then your insurance will pay for your property and hers will pay for hers. In order for you to collect under your neighbors liability under her policy, she has to be negligent in some manner….leaving a candle burning, pan on stove etc.
